Timor Leste IT firm Vorakai Lda said on Friday it has partnered with LEO satellite operator Starlink to deploy satellite broadband connectivity to schools, health services and communities in remote parts of the country.
Vorakai said that its local distribution of Starlink services is enabling tens of thousands of students in rural schools across Timor-Leste to access high-speed internet for the first time.
Students can stream lessons, download research materials, explore digital literacy, coding and research skills, and connect with teachers and peers beyond their villages, while teachers who once relied on outdated textbooks can now bring global resources into their classrooms.
Meanwhile, doctors and nurses in remote clinics can access telehealth services, specialist advice, and up-to-date medical information instantly.
Vorakai CEO Tammy Kassiou said the Starlink service is also creating new business opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
“People are exploring digital-based business startups, from online services to e-commerce, creating a new wave of entrepreneurial opportunity,” she said in a statement. “For many, this is the first time they have had the chance to engage with the digital economy.”
Kassiou also claimed the rollout of Starlink in Timor-Leste is also positioning the nation as an emerging digital hub in the region.
“Connectivity underpins education, healthcare, business and government. It’s the difference between being locked out of opportunity and being ready to compete and thrive in a global economy,” she said.
