Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) has ordered local telecommunications company MTN Rwandacell PLC (MTN Rwanda) to solve all problems related to its call services.

RURA issued a statement saying that sanctions will be taken if the biggest operator by market share fails to improve its quality of service (QoS).

“The Regulatory Board hereby issues an Enforcement Notice directing MTN RWANDACELL PLC to solve all network connection issues related to poor calls connections (first attempts failures), drop calls, and silent/garbled-speech calls,” RURA said in a statement dated August 19.

On social media platforms including Twitter, the new directive was also met with excitement with many people sharing their frustrations with the operator which has affected them in various ways.

According to local media, MTN Rwanda has said they will strive to meet the deadline set by the regulator to have fixed the technical glitches that have for months affected their services, leaving customers dissatisfied.

In a statement to The New Times, MTN Rwanda said that the problems were already known to them and that they have been trying to solve them.

MTN Rwanda, which started in 1998, boasts of having the largest market share with over six million subscribers. It is part of the South Africa-based telecom company MTN Group.
