SoftBank is reportedly planning to launch an investment fund focused on the Latin American market.
According to Bloomberg, the unit will be helmed by the group’s COO Marcelo Claure – who until May last year held the role of CEO at US operator Sprint.
While SoftBank has not disclosed any details, Bloomberg reported that billions of dollars may be made available for the fund. Its exact targets are not clear, but SoftBank has a track record of investment in the region, having launched SoftBank Latin America Ventures in 2000.
The unit will be entirely independent of the SoftBank Vision Fund, which is a separate vehicle for international investment in technology firms. However, SoftBank has also invested in Latin America through this unit.
