India’s Jio Platforms (JPL) announced on Sunday it has surged 320 places year-on-year in the latest Patent Co-operation Treaty (PCT) rankings released by the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) to crack the global top 20 list of PCT applicants.
Jio – which now ranks 20th on the WIPO rankings list – noted that its leap up the rankings chart came despite global PCT filings growing by less than 1% globally in 2025. Other companies in the top 20 include Huawei, Samsung, Qualcomm, LG, Panasonic, Nokia, Google, Apple and Microsoft.
Jio Platforms reported that it has filed 6,817 patents cumulatively as of March 31, 2026. Of those, 2,393 patents were filed in India and 4,424 across foreign jurisdictions. So far, just over 1,000 of those patent applications have been approved – 538 in India and 471 in international markets.
Jio’s patent portfolio includes 5G, 5G Advanced, 6G, artificial intelligence, AI-native networks, cloud-native platforms, intelligent automation, radio access, core network software, edge intelligence, fixed wireless access, network slicing and digital services infrastructure.
Jio Platforms MD Akash M. Ambani said the WIPO ranking is an important external recognition of Jio Platforms’ R&D productivity and intellectual property depth that also puts homegrown Indian tech innovation firmly on the global tech creation map across multiple tech domains.
“The rise of Jio Platforms to the global top 20 in the WIPO PCT rankings reflects our years of efforts towards transforming into a deep-tech company,” he said in a statement. “It demonstrates the velocity of innovation at Jio across multiple advanced technologies, which will continue to grow in coming years.”
Ambani also gave credit to Indian prime minister Narendra Modi’s “Atmanirbhar Bharat” (Self-Reliant India) policy to promote the country’s self-sufficiency in technological development and transform it into an exporter of technology. “We are proud to contribute to India’s journey towards becoming a global deep-tech powerhouse.”
